CONDOLENCES are pouring in for murdered South African national team captain, Senzo Meyiwa, who was gunned down south of Johannesburg on Sunday evening.
President Jacob Zuma expressed shock and sadness at the death of the Orlando Pirates skipper.
"We mourn the death of this young footballer and team leader, whose life has been taken away at the prime of his career.
"The law enforcement authorities must leave no stone unturned in finding his killers and bring them to justice," said Zuma in a statement his spokesperson, made available to media on Monday.
It was reported Meyiwa was killed during a robbery.
SAFA President, Dr Danny Jordaan, also expressed sadness at the death of Meyiwa, who was aged 27.
"We are shocked and devastated by the tragic news of South Africa's current number one goalkeeper and captain of Bafana Bafana. Here was a man who was an integral part of the revolution of our beloved national team under Shakes Mashaba.
"For him to leave is like this is shocking. As an Association we expected so much from him, the nation had pinned their hopes on him following brilliant displays in the Bafana Bafana jersey, more so in the recent AFCON matches where kept a clean sheet in all four games. We will surely miss him," said Jordaan.
Meyiwa played seven times for the national team, captaining the side four times.
His last appearance was against Congo on October 11.
Meyiwa represented his country the Under 17, U20 and U23 levels.
The club was struggling to come to terms with his demise.
"This is a sad loss whichever way you look at it - to Senzo's family, to his extended family, to Orlando Pirates and to the nation", commented club chairman Dr Irvine Khoza.
Pirates have requested the postponement of the eagerly-anticipated match against Kaizer Chiefs.
It was scheduled for Saturday.
