A man beheaded his mother then kicked her severed head across a road in an horrific scene that was witnessed by dozens of  bystanders.

The body of  the college professor Patricia Ward, 66, who was only wearing her underwear, was found on one side of the street in front of an apartment building in Long Island street.

Her decapitated head was discovered on the opposite side of the road 

 Minutes later her son is believed to have committed suicide by jumping in front of a train near the street in New York, police said.

He was identified as Derek Ward by the Daily News. The 35-year-old had a criminal history and psychiatric problems spanning a decade. 

Beheading victim Patricia Ward taught language arts for 28 years at Farmingdale State College in New York
